CSE 490 - VR

Assignment #6

This assignment will be divided into 2 parts. (A) Exploring sound for VR in Unity; and (B) Updating the Unity VR versions of each act.

(A) Exploring sound for VR in Unity

In terms of audio for our film, the main questions we will have to address are:

  • Ambient: What does it sound like to be in the space?
  • Positional: How can you spatialize in Unity? In other words, how can you use sounds to successfully direct the viewer's attention to certain locations?
  • Movement: How does audio follow objects (i.e. animate) in Unity?

In order to answer these questions, each group will need to create a scene in Unity and test their assigned moment.

  • Act 1 - Blue Eyes falling and looking back at the darkness (ambient)
  • Act 2 - Looking back and forth from the Tyrant's hand to the followers (positional)
  • Act 3 - Blue Eyes running away from the star people (movement)

(B) Updating the Unity VR versions of each act

For part B, please update your unity files based on your goals and the feedback given in class.

As a reminder, these are:

  • Act 1 - Time and plot the beats of the Act 1 shots in VR so it feels continuous
  • Act 2
Figure out what's happening with the long exports (check Maya export and Unity import settings)
Fix performance issues (turn down quality, uncheck dynamic batching)
Play around with scale of tyrant (feels too small right now)
Framing - Try to keep the background behind the follower + hand silhouette consistent
Try to use VR to emphasize the emotions in the shot (move viewer closer, stretch Tyrant's arm a lot to emphasize the arc)
  • Act 3
Artists - fix and update animations, check Maya export settings and Unity import settings
Low level engineers - learn more about shaders (check Unite talks)
High level engineers - fix eye issues and animation transitions between shots

For Lab on Tuesday

Use your lab time to meet within your groups and discuss any technical and artistic challenges you've encountered. Compare notes and determine goals to help you stay on top of the 3 week calendars you created last week.
